The Academy Middle School curriculum continues to build upon the fundamental skills and muscle development of previous studies in the Pre-School & Junior School divisions. An emphasis on correct placement and technique will be applied. As the difficulty of set exercises increases. Middle School students will find movements are performed to a more advanced musical tempo. Alongside this students are introduced to a more complex understanding of placement of the body, legs, arms, and head. While also developing epaulement in their exercises at the barre and in the centre.
In the Middle School Division, there is a focus on mastering jumps (allegro) and placement of the body on the toes. Additionally, the development of elementary skills and the coordination of movements are studied in greater detail. There is an introduction of demi-pointe in exercises in the centre of the studio. Students will gain the ability to balance and support themselves on one leg as practiced in adagio exercises. There is also the introduction of movements en tournant, pirouettes, and battus. Middle School students will develop proper coordination of movements in all parts of the class. Expressiveness in each exercise is demanded and stressed. Students will continue their study of age-appropriate repertoire, theory, and dances.
